SHOTOVER'S DEATH.

A once celebrated mare has just gone to the happy hunting grounds, in the Duke of Westminster's Shotover, who won the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby in,. 1882, says "Ranger." She wa& by Hermit out of Stray Shot, by Toxophilite out of Vaga, by Stockwell, and was bred by Mr Henry Chaplin in 1879. I remember coining back to this country fiom abroad just after she had won the Two Thousand, and meeting a good judge who kne\V all about her, and who assured me she would not stay the distance at Epsom. She did, however, and won her race there, too, though she beat nothing of any account, and no doubt was not a real stayer and only a moderate Derby winner. This she showed by only finishing third in the St. Leger, being kept out of second place by GeheimniES, whose best form was always shown over short courses. At the stud Sholover was a failure, in spite of her stout blood on the dam's side, and although she was mated with such high-class sires as Bend Or, Ormonde, Melton, Amphion, St. Simon, and Orme. The most successful of these alliances was that with Melton which produced Bulliugdon, who went very close to defeating Isinglass in the first Princess of Wale 9 Stakes at Newmarket in 1894, and who is almost sure to make a successful sire. The worst was naturally that of Amphion, the produce being Lycus, who was exactly the sort of wretch anyone might have expected him. to be, considering his inbreeding to Newioinater. Orion, by Bend Or, showed some form as ft two-year-old, but never did any good afterwards; and Orville (by Ormonde) is, I believe, doing well as a sire in the Argentine Republic, where he was sent in 1892.
