PROSECUTING THE POLICE.
Eiias- Gaudin was fined £15 and coats at Wellington last week for tote betting, J^n. indemnity certificate was asked foe ,<pn behalf* of the police officers who betted with the man in order to obtain evidence, but Mr Kenny, S.M., said the indemnity clause in the act I only referred to offences connected wjij.h ennfing houses, and declined to give the certificate. ' With regard to the suggestion by Mr Wilfoid, counsel for the defence, that he should dive gome expression of opinion on the act itself, ho considered that it would be improper and injudicious. Mr Wilford said that he hnrl drawn un informations against Detective Broberg and Probationary Constables Kidd and M'Carthy for conspiring to commit a crime, anc^ ankotl the court to order thpir arrest. Mr Kenny refused, as* they wereonly "subordinates, but anyone could lay an information. Three informations were laid next day. each charging Acting-detective Brobertr aiid Probationary Constables Kidd and M'Carthy with (1) procurinc the commission of a crime. (2) aviating in the commission of a crime. (3) betting "tote" odds. The charges, which are the outcome of a recent prosecution acainst alleged tote bettors, will be .investigated on May 1.
