PUBLICANS' CHILDREN AS TEMPERANCE TEACHERS.
A Westhoughton correspondent sends us the following interesting particulars. — "I take the liberty of mentioning to you an interesting incident which has just come under my notice: — "A little while ago a gentleman came to a Church of England day-school in this district from some temperance society (I Rave been unable to find out which), anil, after giving the usual lecture to the school children, requested them to write for composition some little account of what they knew of ' Drink and Drinking.' He promised to give five certificates to the best epsayists, and on these being awarded, it was noticed by the head master nnd the disappointed school children that all the five successful ones (all girls) were the children of publicans. There are only three public houses in tho district, but two of -these supplied two successful temperance essayists each ; and Ihe other house had its successful representative also.
" I am quite sure that the fathers of these children would be even more surprised than their children on hearing the result, but not so surprised <es the lecturer would be if he knew that his certificates adorned the walls of the 'Rosa and Crown.' 'The Blue Lion,' ond ' Tho Rose Hill Tavern.' " — Alliance News.
