A PETITION.
The greater part of the afternoon was taken up in debating a motion that the report of the Native Lands Committee with reference to the petition of Henare Tomoana re the interest of his children in the Karamu reserve be agreed to. As the report embodied an expression of opinion with regard "to the relative merits of the rival claimants, the Hon. Mr BOWEN moved that it be referred back to the Committee for reconsideration. This was negatived, and the report agreed to. — The Hon. K. OLIVER asked for the Speaker's ruling on the propriety of the petitioner taking part in the division, and it was agreed to postpone the debate to enable the Speaker to inquire into the matter.— The Hon. Mr TOMOANA explained that he was not personally interested, and was quite willing to withdraw his vote.
In the House of Representatives on Tuesday, the Light Locomotives Bill was again discussed and again referred back to the Private Bills Committee. Replies to questions took up the remainder of the afternoon. In the evening the Estimates were considered, but the progress made was not very great, as only Class I Legislative had been passed up to the hour for closing the telegraph office.
