THE KAIKOHE TRAGEDY.

AUCKLAND, September 1. At the Supreme Court the hearing of th« charge preferred against Mrs Amy Stewart of having murdered her four - year-old daughter at Rakauwhi, near Kaikohe, in. June last, occupied the attention of Mr Justice Conolly and a jury. Accused is 25 years of age. It transpired that she and her husband lived under very poor circumstances, and for three months previous to the commission of the act received charitable aifi. Accused sat in the dock, and appeared to take no interest in the proceedings. Mr J. R. Pveed, who appeared for the defence, set up a plea of insanity. The woman was committed to the asylum pending the Colonial Secretary's pleasure.
