ALARM BELLS IX HOTELS .

WELLINGTON, September 2. At the quaiierly meeting of the Licensing Committee to-day a repoit was read from the police complaining of an alarm bell which is in uss at the Raiifurly Hotel. The report stated that on account of this means of signalling the police could not gain admittance to the hotel without the occupants being made aware of their approach. Mr Skerrett, who appeared for the (Crossey), denied the jurisdiction ' of the committee to go into the matter at the quarterly meeting. He deprecated hotelkeepers being harassed in this manner, and contended that the proper course would have been for the police to lay an information and attempt to prove their accusation. The bell had been removed as soon as Crossey knew it was objected to. Mr Kenny, S.M., said there was no application before the committee with regard to the license, and he did not see that the committee could do anything. At the same time he thanked the police for making the report.

The confusion caused by the Molyneux being niArked on the maps the " Clutha, " is thus dealt with by our Ctyde correspondent : In spite of all maps and recognised geographies this name [the Molyneux] still adheres to our grand, old river. Molyneux it is. and Molynetix it will remain. Perhaps tho reason is that the word is so much less haroh than that of Olutha owing to the presence of so many sweet-sounding vowels.
