TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL.

| An ordinary meeting of the Taieri County Council held on Friday was attended by tha Chairman (Mr C. Samson), Crs Chi'iholm, Miller, Douglas, Peat, Todd, and Harrison. INSPECTOR'S EErOKT. The Inspector of Works zeportod re the gra\el from Jones's to Eortle's on the Brighj ton road, suggesting that the \ote (£43 16s 8d) : b^ spent on more necessary works further i down, the coast. Theie was a, bad piece of ' sandy road near Palmer's, six chains in length, | that would cost about £20 to repair ; and I another sandy piece- at Bairy's Lagoon that j would take about £15 to put in a pioper condition. Perkins's Pinch and some of the old • culverts, which required lengthening, would . absorb the vote. The gravelling might be gone on with belore next winter. The Henley road had been very bad during the winter, and the part known as '"The Straight" had become very bad, and unless something was done to it this summer the road would be impassable. There was only £30 allocated | for the maintenance of this road, and £15 for gravel. The contractor for the Olakia Cemetery road had scarcely touched the road for I the last two months, and he (the inspector) t asked the council to decide what was to be done with regard to the matter. Pie had i taken a section on the road to Allan Mann's , farm, Maungatua. and found that a cutting ' 10ft deep would be required to get a 1 in 6 grade. The male' ial from the cutting would ' be used to fill up a large ho] low at the bottom. , The cost would be aboui £30, less the yssistance to b9 given by the parties concerned. Mr Reid wanted a track made to his small grazino- run on Maungaltn. There was money , allocated for the work, which would have to Ibe done by day labour. Messrs Lawson and | Robinson wanted work dome loading to their ! respective" sections in block XV, Maungatua. ; He suggested that the work be done by day i labour. A road lending to Mr Mitchell's land in block I. Mount Hyde, would have to j be taken in hand this summer, as the money [ had been allocated from time to time. He i thought it would be sufficient to make the ' gullies passable. Higeins's road would have | to be attended to and improved this season. | When the men at work on the Deep Stream j Quartz Reef road were finished theie he mii tended to put them on Higeins's road. Surfaceman Junge had resigned, and someone ' would have to be appointed in his place. — The report was adopted, and it was resolved that James Keith be allowed another month to finish his contract on. tho Otakia Cemetery road ; that Or Harrison and the inspector be authorised to appoint a surfaceman in StrathTaieri riding in room of W. Blair Taieri Township : also the payment of ! £14 14 s bd in reaped of goldfields revenue. | A circular was read from the Gore Borough Council forwarding for consideration a num- ! bcr of resolutions passed by that council on [ the subject of municipal franchise reform. — | Received. j Jlr G. Nicbol. rabbit inspector, wrote ' calling attention to the spread of gorse en the i river "beach below tho V\ est Taieri bridge, and requesting that it be cleared at once — Referred to the inspector to employ a man I to burn the gorso at a favourable time. [ -"Mr P. Larsen wrote asking if the council ' would let him the grazing right, also tiie right to build, on tho Quarry re-.erve, section 31, block T. Maungatua district. — It was resolved | that Mr Lavsen be allowed to occupy the rcj serve at an annual rent of £1 per annum, on ' condition that he cleared the gorse off the I section. I Me33.-s Irvine and Stevenson wrote asking ! tho council if they would be prepared to issue a .slaughtering license for premises at AVingatui to be used for the purpose of meat preserving, fertilisers, and freezing works : and | also on what terms such a license would be j issued. — It was resolved that after the usual conditions of application were complied with the council would consider the application. ! Denniston wrote, on behalf of a i number of ratepayers in Brighton, requesting , the council to make the necessary road forma- , Tiion to connect Queen street or Bath street, j Brighton, with the Brighton parade. — ileferrcd to Cr Douglas and the inspector to inspect the locality, with power to act. Mr J. H. AVilson wrote offering a portion of his land in section 30, block XA 7 , Maungatua district, to make the Berwick- AYaipori road. — It was resolved that a copy of the letter be forwarded to tho engineer to report on the matter. A petition was received from a number of residents in Sutton district asking for the erection of a small bridge over the Taieri River. — It was decided to take no action in regard to tho matter. GENERAL. Accounts amounting to £575 12s 2d were passed for payment. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr Harrison, seconded by Cr Peat — "To advertise that action would be taken against persons offending against the council's heavy traffic by-law, unless the license fee was paid before the end of the present month." It was decided to make fresh application to the Lands department for payment of land revenue accrued previous to 1888, of which particulars were sent to the department in March, 1897.
