EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS.
The quarterly returns of attendance for the period ended 20th June, which have been compiled by the secretary to the Education Board, show that there were 220 schools in operation in the district, employing 226 male and 295 female teachers, besides 32 teachers of sewing. The number of pupils on tiie rolls at the beginning of the quarter was 21,435, and at tho end of the quarter 21,408, comprising 11,046 boys and LU,6b2 girls. The strict average attendance was 9600 boys and 8915 girls, making a total of 18,515, being 230 less than the total for the previous quarter, 613 less than that for the December quarter of 1897. and 1061 less than that for the Juno quarter of 1897. Tho working average was 89 more than the strict average— viz, , 18,60*1 — • being 219 less than the total for the previous quarter, 636 loss than that for the December quarter of 1897, and 1058 less than that for the corresponding quarter of 1897. The averages at the city and suburban schools were : Kaikorai 720, George street 663, Albany street 651, Normal 643, High street 585, Arthur street 561, Union street 518, Caversham 494, Forbury 479, Mornington 463, North-East Valley 445, Macandrew road 403, Kensington 357, liavensbourne 191, Anderson's Bay 114, St. Olair 98, Wakari 81. The attendances at Oamaru wore: South School 418, North 379, Middle 285. At the District High Schools: Port Chalmers 46f, Tokomairiro 273, Palmerston 260, Balclutha 232, Lawrence 220.
