Monday Afterxoox.

•On Monday evening the Ivahanga Club met at the residence of Mrs Valentine, View street. Miss Macassey and Miss L. Roberts were joint chairwomen on the occasion, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. T.ctween 40 and 50 ladies were present. The first item on the programme was given by Mis Theomin, who sang two .short songs by Schumann in German, which were much appreciated by till her hearers. Miss M. Cargill then gave a very amusing recitation by Bret Harte, which was followed by a trio, "A little bit of .string," from "The Circus Girl," feimg, acted, and danced in a clever manner by Miss Muriel Maitland, Miss, L. Roberts, and Mi&s Lily Shand, each dressed very prettily and suitably to the parts taken by them, this provia^ a very enjoyable item. After tea, coffee, and refreshments served in the dining room, Mrs Turton gave a most amusing reading called | " Rdgglcs's Dinner Party," which caused i much "laughter, and was followed by Miss ' G. Roberts, who played a brilliant pianoj forte solo. The last' item was a dialogue i acted by Mrs Valentine and Mrs Leslie Hanis, entitled "Re-engaged," which was extremely funny, and tested the artistic mciits of the perfoimers, giving much pleasine to all present. The next meeting of the Knhanga Club will be held on the Bth inst. at the residence

of Mrs Woodhovise, Alvo street. Miss F. Cargill being chairwoman for the occasion.

| On Wednesday and Thursday afternoons , Mrs P. Isaacs gave afternoon tea to a mnn- | bar of her friends at her new residence in i Royal Terrace. On both afternoons dolig'jt- ! ful music, vocal and pianoforte, was rendered I by different guer-ts, and a very pleasant time v was spent by all.

On Saturday afternoon Mrs Stephenson gave a large "At home"' at her residence, " Comsborough." Notwithstanding the inclemency of. the A\eather fully 100 guests were present, and a A-ery enjoyable time was spent. Mrs Stephenson being unfortunately ill and confined to her room, Mr and Miis Stephenson received the numerous guests in the hall. Tea and coffee were served in the drawing room, Avheic the table Avas beautifully decorated with daffodils, lighted by large and small silver lamps with yell >w shade-;, and laden with all kinds of dainties Music Avas carried on in the dining room during the afternoon, songs being rendered by Mfs Theomin, Miss Millar, Mrs Valentine, Mr Hunter, Mr George Stephenson. and Mr Jones ; a sst,a t , eet duet by Miss F. M'Lean and Miss Kempthorne, "and piano- | forte solos by Mi&s Fricker and Mrs R. Grey. An adjournment was made during the afternoon to the large breakfast room, Avhich was temporarily fitted up as a theatre, w ith &tage .suitably arranged for the occasion. A comedy entitled " Circumstances Alter Cases 1 ' was produced and carried out w ifch great success. The characters Avere sustained I by Miss Stephenson, Mrs Valentine. Mrs Leslie Harris, Mr Fred Jones, Mr C. Peterson, and Mr D. M'Lean. The acting j thionghout Avas spirited and clever, and I caused no end of amusement to the specta- | tors. The introduction of theatricals berig I somewhat of a novelty at such a gathering ' added much to the enjoyment of the afternoon.

F. Edmond, coat and skirt of navy blue cloth Avith tan Avaistcoat, and hat of lobstercoloured A'elvet Avith black plumes ; Mrs Theomin. a coat and skirt of dark purple cloth braided with black, small black toque ; Mrs T. Fergus, smart grey tweed dress braided Avilh black and having vest ot Avhite covered Avith jewelled embroidery, pmall black velvet toque Avith grey bird and feathers ; Mrs Sargood, dark green coat and skirt, Avilh soft front of pale green silk, small green hat ; Mrs Harris, brown tweed, the bodice trimmed Avith brown velvet and black astrachan. large picture hat of brown velvet trimmed Avith feathers and blue rosettes; Mrs Leslie Reynolds, dress of olne green cloth braided with black, small toque ; Mvss Williams, a stylish blouse bodice of crimson lartun silk with black skirt and .small toque of crimson sta'aw trimmed Avith black ; Miss Shand, electric blue cloth A\ith bodice of blue velvet trimmed with fin, huge picture hat of black velvet; Mrs Ritchie, styli-:h diess of black Avith pink chifron front, black and pink hat ; Mrs Roysc, black dress with sealskin jacket and pretty black and Avhite bonnet ; Miss Dunne, costu'ms of A-iolet cloth trimmed with violet A'elvet, small toque ; Miss G. Macassey. jacket and skirt of grey tweed, and hat ot red velvet trimmed with black. During the play Miss Stephenson wore a pretty Avhite muslin dress trimmed with lace insertion, with sash and neckband of turquoise- blue nbbon ; Mrs Valentine, costume of black j>ilk ; Mrs Harris, brown tweed dress.
