WELLINGTON WING WHISPERS
By P. ROMPTK&.
July 30. De\r Pasquin,— The Cowan Dramatic Company finished with our Opera House on Tuesday night, and are now touring the Manawatu district, where they should do very well, for they are a good company for the country though not class enough for the cities. The Hellers are doing the Wau-arapa, and according to all accounts arc also doing all right. In the city itself we arc having a dead slump in the matter of entertainments, although tho cloud is to burst on Monday with a season of Tom Pollard's best— " Djin-Djin " being the opening piece, with a new burnishment to that which was given the piece when last it was presented in Wellington. Tom Pollard and his company are putting in this week in Masterton, and are^ having a recoid season. The takings at the Town Ilall on Wednesday night constituted a record. The sum ol £106" was taken by the Inman Company, but this amount was considerably beaten. 1 had a chat the other day with two strangers who came to urf across the water by the Vancouver mail last week. Mr Manager Curtis I found to be a funny dorg, aaid his " boom ''— Professor Dante— must be a very clever fellow, for he says mighty little about himself, a fact which is sufficiently remarkable in a player, especially a variety player, to be taken note
of. I also met Mdlle Edniunda, who is chief conspirator with the Prof, in his illusions, and 1 found her exceedingly pleasant. Mrs Curtis is also with the' company. You will be seeing these latest arrivals professionally before I sball, a? they have Icio foi seasons in Clmstehurch and Dunedin, and the towns between these places, so that you will bo ablo probably to" tell me that Carl Hertz must look after his laurels when Piofessor Dante is about. The company is a small one, but from all accounts is a very good one, the Prof, being dubbed a very prince of illusionists.
This is what a Masterlon paper says of your southern songstress : — Miss Jeanne Ramsay, who is undoubtedly the finest singer of Scotch songs in the colonies, has been secured for the Caledonian concert in Masterton on August 4. She will sing "My am native heather" (Glover), " Caller Ou " (Gray), and also " Sing sweet bird " (Ganz), by special request.
It has taken mo a week to make up my mind to mention it , here goes, however, but go easy on the lino. The German Club had a musical bardy, and its name I'm afraid for to send, but as it interests herrert and damen — it waa Gemuethlicher Damen Abend I At the beginning of the everting, Herr Focke, the German Consul, warmly congratulated the club upon its success and numeious membership, and expressed the hope that they would spend very many more such pleasant evenings in the club together. Before the conclusion of the concert Herr Bendix IlallenGtein, the Gemipn. Consul for Dunedin, in a graceful speech thanked tho members of the club for their kind invitation to him, and for the delightful evening he had spent amongst them. The speaker then expressed the hope that if any of the members should visit Dunedin they would allow him to return their kindness and courtesy.
