The Proprietors of the Otago Daily Times and Witness beg to announce that one of the feature of their Christmas Annual for 1898 will bs A SERIES OF TEN SPECIALLY - WRITTEN SHORT TALES. These tales will be profusely illustrated, and as. the O.D.T. and W. Annual will"be printed on specially imported paper similar to that used for their last Christmas Annual, it is confidently anticipated that in the Illustration of the Tales a highly appreciated feature of the issue will be the result. THE PEIZE TALE COMPETITION will extend from April 1 to June 30, and PRIZES TO THE VALUE OF £27 will be offered as below :— First Prize ... £5 0 0 Second Prize 4 10 0 Third Prize 4 0 0 Fourth Prize 3 10 0 FifLh Prize 3 0 0 Sixth Prize 2 10 0 Seventh Prize 2 0 0 Eighth Prize 1 10 0 Ninth Prize : . 1 0 0 ' Tenth Prize 0 10 0 And the proprietors reserve to themselves the right to use any other tale in the competition at the same rate of remuneration as the 30' a prize. 0 CONDITIONS OF THE PRIZE TALE COMPETITION. No rale to exceed 3000 words in length. While Colonial subjects will have the prefer ence, the plot need not necessarily have a Colonial foundation. Each tale to be accompanied by a specially" written description of the chief characters or tho chief incident, which will be placed by tha publishers in the hands of a competent artist to be sketched for reproduction as a half-tone engraving. As an alternative to this a sketch of the character or incident would be acceptable. This envelope will remain unopened until the receipt of the awards from the judge. All tales to be originial, and the iona fide work of the writer.
