Among the contents of the Pal] Mall Maga- ■ zinc for May are severaJ interesting articles, j | " Old Memories," by Sir Hugh Gough, V.S., ' = with its accompanying illustrations, being one |of them. Afghanistan from 1878 to 1880 is j the scene of these " Old Memories." Some ! very fine ' illustrations accompany the article, on tho late John Loughborough Pearson, R.A., while a chatty article- on " Capitals of Greater Britain " embodies a description and some excellent views of Melbourne. In fiction Anthony Hope stills chronicles in Uiis very j beet style the complicated affairs cf \ ." Eijixpert of Hemfczan,"' while several other ! tales and stories make up the pleasant bill of fare. We should not omit to mention the I beauty of the frontispiece, which is from tin ! original etching entitled " A Street in ! Hildesheim." j In the Home JVJagazine for .April we have i the first number ~ef what promises to. be a
bright and interesting semi-religious piiblica- t i tion. Somewhat larger than that capital i little magazine Home Chat, it is printed in nice clear type, with a few good illustrations, : and a great deal of capita) writing. Under > the title of "Men who are Moving the World " comes a sketch of Dean Farrar. Ac > : companied by a portrait; a serial story l*y • . Mrs Walford is begun, and " Sunlight Talks to Girls," by Mrs Snow, promises to be a really good series. The music and words of , a new hymn are given, and something for ( every taste seems included in " Science : Rambles," " Where and How to Travel," j " Children's Pages," and the inevitable nuzzle j ; competitions, without which surely no penny i ', magazine could hope to exist. In this case of .' ; course the subjects are Biblical, as becomes a I semi-religioua publication. In conclusion we j ' may add that the new aspirant for popularity ; is issued by the world-wide firm of caterers, j | George Nevvnes (Limited), and is edited by , .George Clarke and Frauk Newnes. Messrs j W. J. Prietor and Co. send us the number . under notice. ' ' The Triad for June 13 a particularly afctrac- i tive number. Among the literary contents j the editor has an exceedinly frank criticism of the recent eighteenth annual exhibition of j the Society of Arts at Auckland— a criticism ] which the exhibitors cannot but find of m- j • teresfc whether they admit its justness or not. i j A capital picture entitled " Remnants of j ; Kaitangata Bush " bears evidence of the woe- • , ful waste of valuable t">T»l>er which has hecn ■ practised there, as elsewhere, _in what were ( formerly bush districts. A series of excellent pictures of a number of the members of the Pollard Company impart a brightness to tne magazine, while a list of the prizetakers in . the recent competitions also appear in this issue. The musical supplement comprises a minuetto (Don' Giovanni) and Beethoven s " Adieu." . - [i
