BLACKSTONE HILL.
JoNE'6. — The past has 'been 'the driest evc*r experienced here. Although tne crops &b a , nile ware better than the year b-for?, it was sini ply on account of the ground getting a good* soaking tv the spring. As a consequence of the' dry .summer feed is short, -and stock are looking , miserably poor. 'The winter is on us in earnest ; .now — hard frost having set in on Saturday night, ! •*28th, and if it keeps on a few Lights longer all ' work swill :be 'suspended.
Mjning.— Work's almost stopped on account of - ' King Froyt, and 'the music of the culling 'atones ; will toon 'bis heard if the tfrost keeps on much ' longer.
Amusements. — A concert 'ar.d social was held ' bere-on Wednesday 'evening, Ist inst., in aid of' the funds of the Presbyterian Church. Both ' sooially and financially 'it rproved a big success. ' The -first part of the programme wjas given 'by the " school childi'Bn, who rendered their various pieces ' -to perfection. All the performers seemed to 'have ' the fullest confidence in themselves, and not a ' single mistake was noticeable. This speaks volumes for the mistress, Miss M. Faulkner. During the interval refreshments were handed round by the ladies. The second part of the .programme consisted of songs ;and -duets, which were all rendered in a satisfactory manner. It is many ' years since wfi have had such an eojoyable even- : ing. The Rev. Mr Galiie . contributed, in no small degree to the success of the evening 'Votes of thanks were accorded to the various ladies who • provided and handed to 'all the refreshments ' duriDg the evening, also to Mr 'R. Johnstone, who . so abiy filled "the chair. The school children having done bo well, the chairman proposed .that ' they should have a holiday the next day, and enjoy .themselves in the evening, -which '.they did : "to their hearts.' content. i
