MILLTON.

Jtjne,7.— Bicycle iraces.have been all "the go, 'in Milton for .the last few weeks, and .a 'great numher of new uidersjhave come into, .prominence im consequence. Several road .races were 'held .over different courses, .and a :number of local riders have fairly established 'their superiority^ The seasan.is now-jpractically closed, aß.the roads' and weather canndf.be depended upon. '.The'.laßt ta^ce held -was .run during a heavy .shower, ithe road * bsing covered with a thin coating of .slush, and the riders were pitiful .to rbehold. While .the 'interest "in cycling was through 'the agency c'f ,th.eae races, the ol"d club -was formally wound up and a new one lorme'd. Mr .J. 'A. Duthie, who w»3 elected president, -has assuued the members of hia intention to-lay down a 'track at' his 'own expense. -- Mutual laipnoyEMENT Society. — The Tdkomairiro Mutual Tnvprovenieut,Society, gather late in the sea-son, openedAts winter setsion on HFriday with> lecture by the 'Rev. T)r Waddell 'on " Jane 'Barlow, as an Interpreter df Irish Wit and Humour." The audience was fairly large, and the lecture, although dealing rather more with wit and humour in general than with the Irish authore s, was a very entertaining one. Mr James Reid, vice president of -the society, -occupied the chair. Vice-jregal Visia\— The long.expecteS -visit of his Excellency the 'Governor came off with great eclat oa Thursday last, but as a report of the proceedings will no doubt .appear elsewhere I .shall not reiterate it. The day was beautifully .fiae— ■seemed, in fact, to have been made for flic occasion — and 'the streets all 'day presented a -most animated spectacle. The ceremony at.the"Wodllen Mill -was a very interesting one,, and 'the, engine room, in which the -formal opening 'took place, was tastefully prepared for .the occasion, , Mr E. L. Gsigg, formerly of 'the Canteibury Club, Ohrietdhuich, making a very dainty and successful-job of theWble. The Milton Brass Band fully manifested theii loyalty by playing indafatigably all -day from the arrival of the train at 10.-30 a.m. till 7 p.m. Considering-theheat of the day this-was a very praiseworthy performance. One of 'those small breakdowns, which are now becoming .so aggravatingly frequent on the South Otago lines, occurred during the : jqurney to ~Balclutha, and the train was very late in arriving. The Governor was very well pleased with what he saw of the district and its industries, and must surely have been satisfied with his .entertainment .by the mayor and Borough Council. "Woollen Company.— A Bpecial .meeting, of shareholders.in the Bruce Woollen Manufacturing Company was'heldion Thursday last, when^Mr.A. E. Stewart, our popular .young fellow -.townsman, •was elected -to .the directorate ito succeeol thelate "Mr James 'Gray. It •was intimated ".that -ih« factory, which £as vonly'vbeen dw operation .about dhree :mouthß, .is already spaying, anfl ,-2flOQ un.

allotted Bhares were readily subscribed in the room. It is intended to allot £SOOO of the unallotted capital. Death.— Mr William Strain, who died here last ■week, was a native of County Down, Ireland, and came out to the colony ia the early days of the settlement-. He had been ill for some time, and latterly had been iv a very low state.
