WAIKAKA VALLEY.

I May .28.— The weather of 'late has been fairly ■good ior this time of year, although it was not too favourable for the stacking of the late patches of | crop. ITor the last day or two we have had samples of genuine winter weather, wiih a "slight fall of snow occasionally. Health Note.— The beginning of -winter has I been accompanied by a ■considerable amount of | sicknes-s in the district, influenza and German ! measles being the prevailing troubles. Eabtiiciuakk.— A rather severe shock of earthquake wns felt here on Friday, May 2,7, at five ! ininutes to 1 o'clock p.m. At out local blacki smith's shop all the rods and bars that were hanging up suddenly commenced to swin?, and the I water in a tank coutinued to splash over the side | for some minutes. Entertainments.— A detachment of the senior members of the Gore Barod of Hope cam* up to •tha Valley on the evening of the 11th inst. and gave a very pleasant entertainment in the church. Our 'animal church -soiree is to come off on Tuesday -evening next. "School Mattees.— Some disagreeable feeling was caused in -fchis district lately over a letter which appeared in a local paper signed 'by "Parent," and questioning the competence of our school teacher ; 'but in the last issue of the same l>aper there appeared an apology from "Parent," stating that he had been misinformed, and "begging to apologise for the statements contained in ,his previous letter. In justice -bo a teacher it is only fair that anything of this sort should "be satisfactorily cleared -up, as it is 'hard for persons occupying public positions to have reflections caßt .on their professional character.
