CLYDE.

April 3 —It was thought that the effect of. th late rains upon the pasture would be such as t ensure an improvement in the condition of stock before the winter set in. It now appears that no such desirable results have ensued owing to the cold, windy weather and frosty atmosphere that have prevailed since the rainfall was experienced. The growth of grass has not been anything like what it was expected it would be after the stimulating effect of the rain. However, the crops have turned out remarkably well, and as fodder will not be scarce there is reason to expect that stock will not fare badly during the incoming winter. Ecclesiastical.— The Rev. Mr Brown has now taken charge of the Anglican congregations of Roxburgh) Clyde, and Cromwell. The rev. gentleman is to be resident at Clyde, whencehe will administer the affairs of the parish, visiting Roxburgh and Cromwell on alternate Sundays. Mr M'Kee Wright, who, as a divinity student, has been assisting the Rsv. Mr Lothian for some time past, has succeeded in making himself highly popular amongst members of the different denominations upon the goldfields. Mr Wright's discourses are unquestionably crisp and cogent, and bear high testimony of, the young man's fitness for the position and calling he aspires to, and which he will undoubtedly fill with a marked degree of ability. It is rumoured that Mr Wright returns to Dunedin shortly in order to pursue his studies prior to undergoing his final examination for the ministry. The Presbyterian, congregations throughout the district will, I am sure, regret his departure from amongst them, for beyond doubt the attendance at worship has appreciably increased in the various Presbyterian, churches throughout the district since Mr Wright has been stationed here.

Ministerial.— The Hon. the Minister for Lands paid a visit to the Roxburgh district last week, but through pressure of business was unable to proceed further. Of course we expected -Mb M'Kenzie would have stretched a point and come along here, but we were doomed to disappointment. Our member, the Hon. Mr Larnach.. M.H.R.., endeavoured to prevail upon the Hon. Mr M'Kenzie to extend his visit to Central Otago,

but the hon. gentleman declined to do so ; therefore we have to lest content as we have been, and merely solace our wounded feelings with the remembrance of our Governor's recent visit to our district and his prolonged lesidence amongst us. Departure. — Mr Andrew Beattie, for many years Ipsste of the Dunstan Hotel, left Clyde on Saturday last en route for Dunedin, wheie no doubt he intends re-entsiiDg business. Mr R. S Gilkisou held an auction sale bt Mv Beattie's household furniture and effects, the whole of which realised satisfactory prices.

Holiday Trip. — Mr M'Ueorge, county engineer, left here recently on a trip to South Australia. He is accompanied by Mrs M'George, and their holiday is to be an extended one.
