OTAMA.
February 20 — The yearly soiree was held in the Oc.ma Church on Tuesday, February 8. There wa^ a fair muster of the geneial congregation, although it was a very rough day. Tt cleared towards eveninar, however. There was an abundance of eatables, supplied by the ladies of the congregation. Numerous selections were given by the choir, which were well reaeived. Miss Forbes contributed a solo, sung very sweetly ; a duet, "The sea of glass," by Muses Millar and Irvine, was well received, also a quartette by Misses "Forbes and Robertson .md Messrs R and W. Marshall. Ihe speakeis for the evening were the -Rev. P Ramsay (chairman), Rev. (i. Millar, Mr W. D. Stewart, and Mr Tait. Votes of thanks to the choir and organist, the speakeis, and the caterers brought the proceedings to a close. Band. — The Otama Brass Band have secured the services of Mr Aldrwge, of Gore, aa teacher. The band ought to take great strides now. School.— The children attending the school . here were each presented with a bock, and the following girls leceived an additional one for earning the irosr macks duiif g the jeat : — Edith j Anrvle, Jane Forbes, Mary Hartley, Mary Williams, M. Bruce, and Georgioa T\tvel. Me D. Robertson (chairman of committee) gave out the prizes, and each child was the recipient of a p<ueel of confectionery. I would like to know what the boys have been thinking of to allow the giils to set all the prizes? liir Weather.— High winds were prevalent heif> lie<» week. On Wednesday several trees were bbwn over, and a mill which M r as exposed veiy much was blown over. The weither seems now to have taken a tuin for the better, as we have had a week's fine weather, which was badly wanted to lipen the crops.
