CROMWELL.

February 2.— 1 he people of Cromwell and surrounding districts are to have an opportunity of seeing the rf-prefectative of her Majesty. The JMayor, Mr 1 retsch, received a telegram from his Excellency's ADC., staling that tha Governor was going to yi&it Cromwell, and wishing to know if tt c civic oiynitaries wished the visit to be an official one. The .Mayor replied in the affirmative, and early in March this town will be honoured by the vice-regal presence. "When the exact date is known active steps will be taken to receive his .Excellency as befits good and loyal subjects. The borough council has made a small grant towards defraying the necessary expenses. Although pleased to have the to'vn recognised by the Governor, some of the citizens think it rather too poor to aff oul the honour. The people of B^nnockburn aud Lowburn are to be invited to take part in the proct edingg, as ihe visit is regarded not as paid to Cromwdl alone, but to the district of which it f ra» the centre. Band. — I see by your JNfaseby correspondent's notes that the band contest has been postponed. Ourlcc*! band ia either defunct or hibernating. One never hears it or of it. The instruments, •which are the property of the town, ought to be gatheisd together and carefully put away tiil such time as it will be possible to resuscitate tbe band under such management as to ensuie its succem. A good band, carried on under good rules and good management, is a splendid thing to have in a small town ; and it means a dimunition of f-ur pleasures if the band is wholly to disappear from amongst us. Cricket.— A match North v. South Vincent ■was to have been played at Alexandra on show day, but unfortunately full throueh. A match €lyde v. Cromwell will be played at Cromwell on Saturday. I may mention that the Lowburn Club has had a concrete pitch formed.
