Count Kalaoky, Au3fcrc-HaDgarian Mini&ter for Foreign Affairs, is daad. Count Gu«tav Siegmund Kalnoky was descended from the Moravian, branch of an old Bohemian family, and was born at Lettowitz, in Moravia, in 1832. He entered the diplomatic service in 1F59, and from 1860 to 1876 he wa3 Councillor of Legation at the Austrian Embassy in London. In 1874 he wss Minister at Copenhagen, in 38S0 he was seat as Ambassador to St. Petersburg, and in 1881 he was appointed AuetroHungarian Minister for Foreign Affairs. He was a strong supporter of the Triple Alliance and of Austrian iuflue'nce in Bulgaria. He yearly explained the Austrian anti-Russian policy to the Delegations of the Austrian and Hungarian Parliameats, and his action was yearly approved by them. At the close of 1891 Count Kalnoky, who was a devout Roman Catholic, declared that The " Roman question" of the Papacy was still open and lacked solutiou. Thi.s statement caused some excitement in Italy. He also declared against the policy of the Vatican when of late years the Pope seemed to be too friendly to Russia, and therefore unfriendly to Austria The Star of the Bla^k Ea^le in brilliants was conferred on Count Kalnoky by the late Emperor William in 1890, and in the same year the Order of the Annurucade was bestowe-i upon him by the King of Italy.
