He moved— " That the letter be received."— Or Mitchell thought the bridae sh- uld be blocked up to prevent other traffic, for if it were left standing, the council might be responsible. — With this addition the motion was paesed :— With reference to the second ma<ter, Cr Robertson proposed that the value seb agw'ns'j the engineer's services and -wire rope be £60. — Cr Mitchell said the wire rope alone was worih more than that. If the couucil was to value at all, let them put a fair value upon it. — After some discussion, ife was decided to value the wire rope at £70 and engineer's services at £15. From Balelutha Borough Council asking co-operation of council in urging the trustees of the Clutha Floods Relief Fund to inquire into ! losses sustained by the recent floods with a view to affording relief — Cr M'Neit, did cot think it was necessary to do anything further in the matter. From information he had received he understood the matter would be favourably considered. — Several councillors considered that the couecil should lend its assistance in the matter.— Cr M'Lachlan thought the request of the Borough Couccil was reasonable, and moved that this council acquiesce in the step taken — Seconded by Cr (Jumming, and cairied. From Rtceiver of Lands Revenue advising payment into county fund account of £160 9s 2d. "Thirds" and "fourths" from August 2 to October 30 — Received. From the N.Z. and A. Laud Company enclosing tracings and agreement foe signature tn re exchange of road lands at Pomahaka. — The chairman was empowered to attend to the matter. From Kenyon and Hosking, solicitors, advising having lodged with the district land regi«trar tranifer of land for exchange and roadlines through the late Captain Mackenzie's property, and requesting eouacil to forward certificate of title No. 94214 to registrar.— Cr Eobebtson thought the council should know I what it wrs getting, and moved that it be furnished with particulars of tracings and exchange before handiDg over its titles.— Carried. From Charles Wise and five others (Kelso) requesting assistance of council to deeptn ditch along main road, Kelso to Gore —Ou the motion of Cr Robertson petitioners to be granted subsidy equal to one year's rates — say, £5 ; work to be done to approval of engineer. — Seconded by Cr Cumming, and carried. Jefcoat, Lochiadorb, drawing attention to bad state of road from " Mound " to the station, and also to a bad crossing below the Mound, and asking council':; attention to maUer.—- Matter now being attended to. From R. Meiklo in re road to his place at i Waitepeka, stating that he had rnceived a 1 letter from Mr T. Ttlford asking Lma to meet

him and arrange matters, but that he could not do so before council meeting. Should they agree, the council would only hvre to make approach from present road, necessitating some drain pipes and the ditch being filled in, and remove gates and erect t^fevr chains of fencing. — Letter received. From A. and D. Tibaon, Porb Molyneux, applying for a slaughtering license. — Granted. From Benjamin Taylor, Port Molyneux, colling attention to bad state of upper portion of old Swamp road, suggesting that the eides be ploughed and cast into the centre for a distauce of 20 chains, and expressing hi 3 willingness to do the ploughing free of cost. — Request granted, on th^ motion of Cr M'Neil, seconded by the Chairman. Cr M'Lachlan proposed, Cr Cumming seconded — " That tenders be caUed for reducing grade and metalling opposite Mr Roy's propei ty on Clinton-Txpanui road ; also reducing grade and metalling on Orr's Hill road, Clinton and Owaka, and Cairn road ; also that tenders be called for forming impassable portion of Williamson's road ; also formation on we>t eide of Boundary Creek on Clinton- Wyndham road, cost to be charged agaii st moneys accruing frcm ' thirds ' and • fourths.' " Cr M'Lachlan proposed, and Cr Wallace seconded — " That tenders be called for mttalling the most necessary portions along Main ro*d, Clinton-Owaka, up to amount available From ' thirds ' and ' fourths ' ; also for 150 yards maintenance metal on Main South road within Clinton town district ; also 150 yards on hill at west side of Kuriwao-Upper Bridge." Proposed by Cr Johnston, seconded by Cr Robertson— " That tenders be called for metalling six chains on the Clinton-Fuerua road, near Thomas Bkcklock's gate; also five chains metal, more or less, to complete road between Walter Kicoi's gate and the railway." MISCELLANEOUS. Cf M'Neil reported on behalf of himself and Cr Wallace, who had been appointed to attend the meeting of delegates in Dunedin in connection with the Jubilee of the province. When the delegates met ifc appeared that each representative came there with a scheme on behalf of his own particular society, instead of meeting and conferring as to what was best. For this, however, the City Council were not to blame — Cr Wallace also reported briefly, aiter which a vote of thanks was passed to them for their attendance. John Farno's tender for supply of dog collars at £15 per 1000 was accepted. Tenders for collection of dog tax were accepted as follows :— Cafclins Riding, W. Benson, 2d ppr dog ; Pomahaka and Clinton, 3d, and Glenkanich and Waip»hi, 4-d — Joseph R. Mayson ; South M< lyneux and Richardson, 4d — A. R. Leddingbam. The collection of dog tax in Clydevale Riding was left to Cr Mitchell to arrange, and that of Clutha riding to the clerks

William M'Lelland was appointed ranger at Catlins at £5 per year. The monthly pay sheet, amounting to £418 153 10 J, was passed For payment.
