A hostile demonstration of a very pronounced character was made against Mr Ormond's Defiant when the field zttdrned to the scale in the Hutt Park Spring Handicap, which was renewed when the yellow flag was hoisted to indicate that a protest had been entered against the win of the Hawke'a Bay colt on the ground of inconsistent; running as compared with his performance in the Flying Handicap on the first day. The protest was, however, not entertained by the stewards. Consequent upon the good behaviour to-day of the 16 jockeyi interested, a fine of £1 each which was imposed on them for being late at the post in the Maiden Hack Race on Wednesday was remitted by the stewards at the instance of the starter.
