KOKONGA.

October 4. — Much-needed rain is falling today—indeed, it is the beat rainfall we have had during the season. It is none too soon, for the hot sun and blasting winds of the last 10 days have been very severe on the aground. , The drought of last summer has in no way di«couraged' farmers, for sowing operations have been going on steadily, and large areas now only wait plentiful rains t<> bring on an extensive harvest.

Rainfall. — I am favoured again with Mr R. W. Glendinning's rain report. During the month of September rain fell on 13 days, the heaviest fall being -29Ln on the 21st. The total for the month was l"24in.

Otago Central Line.— The station yard and buildings are now finished, and the section between Hyde and,,Kokonga is completed. Last Friday the line was taken over by the Railway department. For some reason unknown to the public the official opening has bsen delayed till the 18th inst. Until that date the ballast engine will continue to bring on goods from Hyde as it has been doing during the past two months*

School.— The school committee htld their monthly meeting on the 4th inst. Thera were present Messrs Williamson (chairman), Glendinning. Gillies, and Maun. The teacher reported that for the month of September the average attendance was 46.- The average attendance for the quarter ending September 30 was 44, while the roll number was '54.
