Behold Him high upon the bloody cross, His drooping head crown'd with the cruel thoi ns, ' ' .Tearless, resigned, while awe-stiuck Nature mourns On earth, in air, her agonising lots ! Blameless He lianas : amid the gibes and scorns Of nir cKing men tliat gentle life ebl» out, While a thick darkness shrouds the murd'rous rput. And the wide world of future judgment warns. Ob, Man of Sorrows ! Thou whose tender mind Nor dream of hate nor thought of vengeance knew, Now to Thy cross we cling, for ob, 'tis there Alone a hope of mercy man may find, For Meicy infinite breathed the dying prayer "Father, forgive— they know not what they do !"
