TO CORRESPONDENTS. A. K. (Dunedin), writes : A friend aud myself had a double on the Autumn and Easter. We saved £1 on each double. My double won, and the party that I had the double with has not paid up. The friend that I was saving the £1 with is looking to me to pay the £1. I don't think I am entitled to do so, hence I ask you to publish an answer whether I should or not. Answer : The practice in laying off a bet is to mention the name of the bookmaker who laid it, whereupon the person who takes the hedging wager says whether or not he is willing to accept the bookmaker's security. If he does accept the bookmaker named, and that bookmaker does not pay, the person who has hedged is not liable. It seeniK to me that "saving" is governed by the same rule. If in your " saving " you gave each other the bookmaker who laid the double, you are free ; if there was no mention of the bookmaker the £1 saved was merely £1 bet between you and your friend, and you lose. Quinine (Hillend), writes : To settle an argument kindly state what hurdle or steeplechase ract'i Liberator won or run in in the North Island. Answer: Season 1893-94— Unplaced Northern G.N. Hurdles won by Melinite, won Hurdle , Handicap. Season 1894-95— Won Northern G.N. Hurdles and G.N. Steeplechase ; unplaced Hawke's Bay Steeplechase ; unplaced Napier Steeplechase. Season 1895-93 — Unplaced First Hurdles at Wellington Summer, won yecond Hurdles ; third in Watiganui First Hurdles, unplaced in Second Hurdles ; second Hawke'j Bay Autumn Fir.it and Second Hurdles ; third in First and second in Second Hurdles at Napier Park ; unplaced Northern G.N. Hurdles, second in G.N. Steeplechaaa. Berry (Wairio) asks whether in cribbage the playing of 8, 7, 6, 9 constitutes a run. Answer : Yes ; two runs, one for the S, 7, 6, the other, a run of four, when the 9 comes in.
