NSWB. 60SSIP. AND ADS. One or two cases of diphtheria in the Saltwater Creek district, Canterbury, have led to the school there being closed. Among the sums voted by the Cabinet for public works are £250 for the Midland railway and £2000 for the Porirua Asylum. The insolvencies of a butcher, a, settler, a tailor, a farmer, a grocer, two labourers, a boob and shoe dealer, and a rabbiter are_ gazetted. Mr P. L. Gilkison, of Invercargill, is leaving for Hume on a bu'.inets trip, and he was accorded a " send-off " on Saturday afternoon. The hospital returns for the p3Bb week are as follow :— Remaining from the previous week, 101 ; admitted during the week, 20 ; discharged, 18 ; — tobal remaining. 103. The Treasurer , of the Free Kindergarten Association acknowledges receipt of the following subscriptions :— Mr A. Wilson and Mrs Raphael, £1 1« each; Mrs Whitson and Mr Coheu, 10s each. Twelve bankruptcies were gazetted last week — a land agent, a cordial manufacturer, a widow, a farm labourer, a publican, * registry office keeper, a bushman, a labourer, a dealer, a carter, and two bakers. At the ballot for sections for the Horsley Down homestead on Friday there was a large attendance and great excitement. There were 764- applications for 25 sections. Nearly all the sections were drawn by young men with sufficient capital to work them. Only one lady out of a dozen drew a prize. The Invercargill licensing committee granted all licenses and extensions from 10 till 11 o'clock. They alsa suggested that the Minuter for Justice be recommended to briDg before the Cabinet the necessity for establishing inebriate homes, the funds required to be obtained by an increase in the licensing fees.
