UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Council of tha Olago University was held on Monday, when there were present — The Vice-chancellor (Mr E. B. Cargill), Mr James Allen, M.H.8., Dr Hocken, Professor Sale, the Rev. A. Cameron, Mr D. White, Dr Sh»nd, and the Hon. W. H. Reynolds. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee reported having passed accounts for payment amounting to £2630 12b 9d. A letter had been received from tbo tenant of run 79c, Barewood, which was rof erred to the council ; an application from the janitor was also referred to the council ; and a roport on tho area affected in Barewood run by the Otago Central railway was forwarded to the council for consideration in committee. The letter from the tenant stated that « cheque was handed for h&lf-year's rent and that tha rent now due would be sent in as soon as possible. The tenant oomplained that the land was rough, that it cost from £35 to £40 a year to keep the rabbits down, and aiked that his case should receive consideration, otherwise ho would not be able to keep it on. Toe Vice-chancellor said ifc had been represented by the Government before the sale of the Barewood lessen that the council were not doing their duty in retaining the land in a. blook, and that if it wa& cut up there would be no end of people applying tor ifc in smail selections of pastoral land. The counoil had hud . the run cut up, and the only piece taken up ab ' the sale was the piece of 500 acres referred to' in the letter— a detached corner, which bad been taken up at a rental equal to lOd per acre. The Vice-chancellor suggested that the university building should ba illuminated on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and the suggestion was concurred without a" formal motion being submitted on the subject. janitor's salary.
