Notes from Wakatipn. (From Our Own Correspondent.) THE MACETOWN REEFS.

THE GLENKOCIC MINP. Arkowtow.v, June 6. — The splendid returns from Macetowu, though they do not come upon the public notice as a surprise, having been loreshadowed by a gradual improvement in tlie mines, created nevertheless a very pleasing sensation at Arrowtown as well as at Macetown. The output of the Glenrock tuina for the last month waR 5160z 17idwt from 400 of stone crushed, givin? an average yield of loz Gdwt 19gr per ton — the record crushing of the mine, which has never turned out so Urge s>n amount of gold for any one crushing. It", has also baen a record crushing in'so far as it enabled the mannger (Mr W. J. Stanford) to make the first remittance to London that tlia Glenrock Company has received from the minr, for after all local liabilities of the company were cleared off there remained £1000 to be sent to London. As proof of the .steady development of this mine, it may be mentioned that it has been self-supporting since the Ist of December last, and as the surplus sent to London is the result wholly anrl so^ly of 'he last crushing the shareholders may look forward to regular monthly repetitious of the dose, which, it is safa to say, will -hs considerably increased, as there will ba no longprany demand upon tbe cake? for back debts. The prospects of the mine are very promising indeed A large body of stone of a. similar quality to that obbained last month ia in sisrht, aud the lode shows every sign of permanence and regularity of yield. Under these circumstances, the Glenrock will run tbe Achilles mine yen' clnsa fo. 1 tho premi<"- -^<-:<:~- -— ■ y^ii^r.,; tit. Wf. u^^^i i . Tiie yield from this mine, whicu is'uuder tho management of Mr W. J. Stanford likewise, is of a very satisfactory and encouraging nature. During last month 211 tons were crushed, pro* ducing 113 <z 17dwt, or an average yield of lOdwfc 19grperton. This return, considering the f*cilities obtaining would pay handsomely if s. largo crushing plant wire available. This company obtained also £156 worth of gold from 37 tous of concentrate? treated by roasting and cyaniding. In this mine, too, the prospectß are hopefnl, and as the present adit offers every facility for exploiting the mine at a lower level than has yet been worked, the chances are that very important discoveries may be met with before lone. There is a number of surface leaders carrying mote or less gold within the boundaries of tho holdings ownai by this company, which, read by the light of practical experience, is a good indication of permanent bodies of stone at some distance down from daylight, and parties who pin their frtith to thist mine have at least good and reasonable grounds for their expectations of ultimate^ success. Mr Stanford, as the manager of these two mines, has shown sound judgment and dogged perseverance, which are the prime requisites in a mine manager, and which bear no small share in the succesa attained in the two mines under his cbargs. With these facts, backed by the example of the Achilles mine, before v?, the theory of permanent lodes, in North Otago at any rate, living only in depth and not Dear the surfac*, or in mountain spur*, cannot be too often repeated and preached; and much as has been said on th-? subject in this column already, every confirmatory item of evidence in its favour must be given due prominence as it crops up, for the question is one wrought with the greatest importance to the colony.
