SCHOOL ESSAYS.

THE RECORD REIGN. I. — By Sarah Ireland (aged 14 years.) The question which is causing much excitement in the little town of Dunedin is, " What Tfill be the best way for as to celebrate the Record Reign P" Some people believe in no celebrations, as far as schools and children are concerned ; others are talking about illuminating the town, firing guns, and lighting bonfires. This would be fine fun for the boys ; but my proposal is to erect a new hospital for the unfortunate and sick children of Dunedin. We have a grand hoipital now ; but we cannot say that it was built in honour of the Queen in the year of her Record Reign. However, as June 21 is drawing very near, we can only wait with patience to ccc how the Diamond Jubilee is to be celebrated. 11.— By D. Hutton (aged 13£ years). At 5 o'clock one morning long ago Princess Victoria was awakened, because something important had happened. On rising she was told by the Archbishop of Canterbury that she was Queen of England. This occurred on June 20, 1837, almost 60 years ago. On June 21, 1897, Queen Victoria will have reigned longer than any other English sovereign. George 111 reigned ne»rly 60 years, but our Queen has beaten him. All her dominions will celebrate this record reign in some way or other. I propose that all the schools should get a week's holiday for (.hie celebration. In London and other great cities it is proposed to feed the poor for a week. Th« Quean of "England can .boast " that the sun never sets on her dominions."
