TABLE TALK

Monday Aftebnoon. Last Monday evening a most enjoyable musical party was given by Mrs D'Arey Haggitt, at her residence inßoslyn. Between 40 and 50 guests were present, a number of ■whom contributed to the evening's enjoyment. The large drawing room was used for a music room, and later on some of the party found their way to another room, where tables were arranged for games of euchre, which were much appreciated. Mr Haggitt sang, "as did .also the Messrs Hsgaitt; Mr J. Haggitt played a piano solo," and MiBS Haggilt gave a very good recitation. Songs were also contributed by Mrs Valentine, Miss Neill, Mr Hume, and Mr Keith Ramsay. Mr Phil. Wright played a violin obligato, accompanied on the piano by Miss Wright, and piano pieces were played by Miss Branson, Mr Dick, and Mr D. Maclean. Altogether a thorough musical treat was enjoyed. On Friday evening a brilliant and most

successful ball was given by Mrs SiaclairThomson at her residence In Park street. Transit House is In every way admirably adapted for the entertainment of a large number of guests, and ss it contains a spacious ballroom, the comfort and pleasure of the dancers were secured. Although fully 150 guests were present on Friday evening there was no crowding whatever, as besides the ballroom so many other rooms were thrown open for the use of the guests. The host and hoßtess received in the drawing; room, and the dancers soon found their way through the spacious corridor to the ballroom, whilst those ladies who did not care to dance could either rsmain in the drawing room or occupy seats prepared In the ballroom, where they could be spectators of the gay sight around them. The billiard room and cardroom were also in readiness for non-dancers, to which not a few of the men found their way. The ballroom floor was in perfect condition, and Mr Yates supplied his usual inspiriting music, the extras being played by Mrs Rose, Mr Macphersoc, and Miss Macassey. Snpper was served in the dining room, where the table was daintily decorated with chrysanthemums. All the arrangements were perfect, and a, most enjoyable evening Was spent by all. Amongst the guests were Judge and Mrs Williams, the Misses Williams, Mrs Ritchie, Mr snd Mrs George Denniston, Mr and Mrs W. Two young debutantes, Miss Denniston and Miss Nina Gibson; took this opportunity of | making their first appearance in public, and both looked very fresh and charming. Miss Denniston wore a lovely dress of white silk, the bodice and sleeves trimmed with puffings of chiffon and silver passementerie, and [ carried a pretty white bouquet. Larnacb, accompanied by Mrs and Miss Larnacb, has left for Sydney, en route for Brisbane, Mr Larnach having been appointed representative of New Zealand at the Queensland Exhibition, which was formally opened last month in Brisbane, Mrs and Miss Gibson left for Sydney on Sunday by the Talune, where they purpose spending the winter months. Miss Handysido is paying a visit to Dunedin, and is the guest of Mrs Bartlemau, Royal terrace. Miss Hilda Williams (Wellington) is staying in Dunedin at present. Mr and Mrs James Mills were to leave Sydney by the Moana to-day for Auckland. While in Melbourne Mr and Mrs Mills were guests at Government Houbs for a few days. Amongst the guests at the same time were his Excellency Rear-admiral Bridge, Flaglieatenant Duff, Miss Manning, and Mr and Miss Peckitt, &c. The vice-regal party, consisting of his Excellency the Governor and Lady Brassey, Captain and the Hon, Mrs Freeman Thomas, and Lord Richard Nevill, accompanied by their guests, attended the Queen's Birthday race meeting at Flemington. Miss Florence Mills has left Christchurch, and is staying in Oamaru, where she is the guest of Mrs Reid, Elderelie. Miss Mills is paying visits on the West Coast, and Miss Gertrude is staying with Mrs Studholme at Waimate. Miss Broderick is at present in Napier, where she is the guost of Mrs Hindmarsh. Invitations have been issued by Sir James and Lady Prendergast for a large ball at Government House, Wellington, to be held on June 23, in honour of the Qneen's accession to the throne. Sir James Prendergaat, as Acting-governor, held a levee on the Quean's Birthday.
