Showalter v. Pillsbury.
Twelfth game in the match between Messrs 3howalter and Pillsbury for the championship of the U.S.A. Ponziani Opening. ;
(a) Mv Hoffer in the Field says this is not good now. It can only' bs played in reply to P-Q 4 before White castles. Up to this point the gospel according to Steinitz has been followed, except that Steinitz transposes White's fourth and fifth moves, and that makes no difference as the same position is reached. See the "Modern Chess Instructor," Part 11, page 4, column 1. Is this another of the veteran's unsound novelties? (b) 8 q-q 3 seems preferable. (c) For an analysis by Tchigorin of this interesting variation see La Strategic, vol. 27, page (d) 14 b x p would bo bad on account of 15 Xt xB. q x kt; 16 Qx P eh, <fee— Hoffer. (c) We select this game for comparison with the fourteenth game which appeared in last issue, and also with the view of drawing attention to this very intereating opening, of which Mr Showalter appears to be very fond, and which is quite a relief fiom the Ruy Lopez and Q P game so frequently playsd in matches.
