AUCKLAND STEEPLECHASE MEETING. First Day — Satuhday, June 5. The weather was unfavourable,* rain falling during the day ; but despite this the attendance was gcod, 3000 being present. Halfway up the straight Pyroxylin was in trouble, St. Gordon shooting to the front at the Derby stand, and winning comfortably by two lengths from Pauoply, who was a head in front of Cleopatra. Dummy, Miss Nelson, and Annabelle wore the first to move, and at the first fence tho first-mentioned was in the lead, Miss Nelson i aud Hairy Legs together, while St. Simon i whipped in the field. Dummy maintained the | lead tor a couple of furlongs, with Annabslle ' second, Hairy Legs third, and Ilex half a length away fourth. Entering the straight for the first time, Hairy Legs got on level terms with the leader, and they cleared the hurdle opposite the stand together ; Annabelle close up third, Ilex fourth, Prince Charlie and St. Simon being together a leDgbh in front of Troubadour and Miss Nelson. At the back of the course Annabelle improved her position, and Ilex also made a forward movement. At the sixth hurdle Dummy had a slight advantage over , Annabelle. St. Simon was also closing on bhe field in good style. Annabelle commenced to leave Dummy as they raced to the second last hurdle, the former having a length's advantage of Dummy when the last hurdle was reached, Ilex and St. Simon together. As they raced I up the straight Annabellc's victory was proI claimed, but she screwed a little at the last j ! hurdle, and Sb. Simon, jumping splendidly, ] j was almost on level terms as they landed, and, , responding gamely to the call of his rider, won j j amidst cheers by a clear length, Ilex third two j I lengths behind Annabelle, and Troubadour j | next. Libeller took command when half the distance was covered, and maintained the lead until the home turn was reached, when Bob came with a | rush, and, getting on level terms at the la&fc hurdle, won, after an exciting fiuish, by two lengths. Passing the stand the latter appeared in the van, and at the back j of the course hud four lengths' advantage. Glauvena aud Muscatel at this stage wore seen to be closing up, and Muriwai falling back beaten left Muscatel, Glauvena, and Dentist, who had oome up with a rush, to fight out the finish, Muscats! beating Dentist by two lengths. Once fairly into the- top stretch, Lady Agnes drew on terms with Glauvena, and, landing first over the obstacle opposite the stsnd, was a. trifle to the good as they opened into the cutting. Half-way down the home turn Lady -Agnes drew away, and was three lengths to the good as she lauded over the hurdle at the top of the straight. From this oub the issue was never in doubfc, Lsidy Agnes coming on and winning by five lengths from Glauvena ; Dentist, 10 lengths away, third. Time, 3min lO^sec. Opening into the straight Recruib was half a length to the good of Bob, and a good run home from the last obstacle resulted in a neck win for the former ; Libeller a good third. Rhino replaced The friar when the firsb obstacle was reached, with Mozel and Sb. Simon in close company, The Friar being next. The order was maintained up the hill and over the post and rails for the fi:sb time. Running down the hill to the sod wall Rhino had increased hia lead to something like 30 lengths from Mozel, and after came Tally-ho, The Friar, and Miss Nelson, with Levanter next. Rhino still held the . lead around the back and down to bhe double in front of tha stand for the second time, but he was collared by Tally-ho as they went through the old water jump, where Miss Nelson closed up to third place, with St. i Simon and Levanter following in the order • . named. Rhino rau off at the water and Perform took charge a leugth in front of Tally-ho, and then enme Bombardier, with Kingswood last. Perform was a oouple of j lengths bo the good ab the back, with Tally-ho i and Bombardier together, but as they ran up the hill Tally-ho closed up to the leader. Perform, jumping cleanly, moved away agaiu at the post and rails, where Bombardier made a faulty jump and fell back, and bhe former could ba seen coming down tho hill half a dozen leugbhs lo the good of Tally-ho.
