Songs were contributed by Misses Grant and Matheson and Messrs S. Dawson and Deaker. A violin solo by Miss Dick and piccolo solos by Mr G-. Dick were fully appreciated, the latter evoking inexorable encores. Great credit is due to the band for their excellent arrangements and music, and more especially to Mr G. J. Grant, the secretary, who did lion's work as M.C. Visitors were present from all the neighbouring districts. Volunteers.— The Bruce Rifles were disappointed on Friday evening, when they paraded for inspection by Colonel Penton, but some tolace was forthcoming in the satisfaction expressed hy Colonel Webb, who was present with Sergeantmajor Towler.

Court. — Many people were surprised at the result ot the case Bruce County Council v. A. Leo .Smith, which was heard at the local Magistrate's Court on Monday before Mr R. S. Hawkins, S M. The claim of the council was for £20 on a promise by Mr Smith to give that amount towards opening ux> a road from the latter's property to Berwick. Mr Smith's defence was that he was not being treated fairly, and that the original terms of tin contract wera not carried out by the council. Mr 1\ Reid appeared for plaintiff and Mr J. F. M. Fiaser for defendant. The case occupied four hours in court, and plaintiffs were finally non-suited owing to their declining to pay stamp duty on the correspondence relative to the offer of Mr Smith so as to constitute it a contract.
