FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE RAILWAY.
RUN OVER WHILE SHUNTING.
A man uamed Thomas Butcbart, 54- years of ! age, mefc with a fatal accident on the railway ! at Otskia on Saturday. He -was engaged there during the grain season, snd while shunting ; slipped and fell, and a carriage passed over his j left leg dreadfully maugling it. Oue ot the employees on the railway placed a tourniquet on the injured man's limb, with the view of | stopping tee bleeding, and he was brought into j town by the express tr&ui, and at ones con- j ▼eyed to the hospital Oa arrival there it was ' considered nfce«sary to amputate the leg. | This wss atco-dingly done, bub the patient i died shortly before 10 o'clock the same nighb ! from shock and loss of blood. The deceased \ ■was for many years station ina-ter afc Duoedin, | and was transferred to Tapanui, and thence to Kelso, where he resigned his position in the Railway department to go into business. Latterly he had been employed Jigain by the department at Dunedin. D< ceased was a son- , in-law of the late Mr Thomas Brebner, one of the earliest set tiers iv Otago, and leaves a widow and four children.
