SEVERE DROUGHT.
STOCK DYING, SETTLERS RUINED. Sydney, May 16. Harrowing accounts of the drought aro being received from the interior. The drought is said to be one of the worst ever experienced. All feed has disappeared, and sheep are dying or are being killed wholesale. One station lost over 20,000, and on many others there is a proportionately heavy loss, many selectors have been completely ruined, and are abandoning their holdings. Some owners as a last resource are cutting edible bush where possible, and others are sending stock to more favoured coastal districts. Ploughing is at a complete standstill. Even if the rain comes within a week, it is feared it will be too late for the grass crops to make headway before the frosts. Melbourne, May 16. A strong gale has been blowing since yesterday morning. Heavy rain has fallen in the Western District, and promises to break up the drought.
