" Indigestion and Nervous Dyspepsia t theii? Origin aud Cure (Dietetic and Hygienic)." by Dr Lurz, of Melbourne, is the title under which. a series «f sketches, possessing the merits of being entertaining *sj well as instructive, have b2en puSlished'in a, volume 4hat comprises somef 160 pages. With the author prophylactics are to be pr-sferred befors therapeutics, aud he indicfttes how (iyspeps;ft la'Jo be avoided by a judicious seieciion of viands rather than isow it i» to be cured when once it has seized its viefcim. The advice which he tenders iv this respect must be invaluable even iC its adoption will involve ou many persons the exercise of a considerable amount of self-denial. For instance, it may ba remarked that he mildly runs a-tilfc against aftsrnooD tea ; that he eojoins a chary use of alcoholic drink, and that he counsels moderation in the use of f obacco. His remarks on remedial agents are compressed within s the last few chapters, and here it is . interesting to note that while' he generally approves of exercise as tending to have a beneficial influence on the human organism in general and the digestive apparatus in particular he does not faroui bicycling. The whole of the sketches are written in a light and pleasing w&y, and really form a valuable treatise, couched in popular language. «
