— Baron Schilling has been vary busy in England purchasing thoroughbred stalliong and brood mares for Russia. He goes for blood, strength, quality, and, above all, soundness. Amongst his purchases is Eaniskillen, from Mr Barlow's stud farm in Yorkshire.

— The Duke of Devonshire's Balsamo, a four-year-old son of Friar's Balsam aud Snood, weighted at 7.4, won the City and Suburban Handicap last week, beating Bay Ronald 7.7 and La Sagesse 7.12 This race is valued at 2000sovs and is run at a mile and a-quarter. —It was a gallop with Leda that put Goldfinur's party in a funk about the Easter Handicap. The gelding headed the'mare at six furlongs, but those present saw plainly that she was pulling off and had Goldspur licked. As things panned out, the gallop wa.q fearfully deceptive, — In the Patea TBaster Handicap a three-year-old filly named Klima, by Vanguard— Creeper, got home from Emerald, and paid £11 65 Muscatel wa» third, the other starters being Losarius, The Onyx, and Adam. St. Vincent (Nelson — Florence) was favourite for the Alton Handicap, and succeeded in beating Klima by half a length. — American stitisttcs show that last seacon Hanover again headed the list of winning sires, his progeny winning about £16,000. Bramble is second with £13,000 : then come Fonsn, £12,900 ; Rayon d'Or. £11,150; Iroquois. £10,980; Sir Modred, £10 580: Strathmore, £W,470; Midlothian, £10,430 ; and St. Blaise, £9965. — Sir George Clifford, chairman of the conference, learns from Mr Elliot, editor "of the New Zealand Stud Book, that the new edition, already completed, may not be published owing to lack of funds. No doubt this intimation will bring clubs to the rescue, but the conference ought to make complete and payable arrangements for the future.

— Sixteen started for the Great Eastern Steeplechase, Larrikin and Grassmere being ths favourites. The Trojan fell at the first fence, while All Fours hurt herself at the stone wall. Grassmere was done with on the hill, and Bernal and Desperado at the fence on the rise. Larrikin was struggling hopelessly under his 13.6. Doondiah looked dangerous at the last jump, but Eclipse beat him by three lengths. — According to Sporting Review, Mr W. Percival, secretary of the Auckland Racing Club, was born in Wanstead, Englaud, and sarly in his career he displayed a taste for horses, and was adjudged a splendid cross-country lad when only in his teens. He arrived in Auckland in 1868, and a few years afterwards became a leading follower of the hounds, and for ten years no more fearless rider could be found across country. On one occasion he met with an accident while riding Coronation in a steeplechase at Canterbury. — Melbourne Sportsman says that the Onkaparinga Steeplechase winner, Eclipse, ia not identical with the brown gelding of the same name formerly trained by J. Cripps, although both were got by Tasmanian sires, the former by Mozart and the latter by Euclid. The Oakbank hero won a number of hurdle races up country in South Australia under big weights, but probably his most meritorious victory previous to last month's achievement was winning the Adelaide H.C. Open Steeplechase with 11.3, a fair horse in Sir George running second on that occasion with 9.12.

— What is termed the most memorable turf trial of the decade, and the boldest and most notorious attempt at fraud in the history of European trotting, was recently concluded at Jlerlin. On February 5 Robert T. Kneebs, a wellknown American owner and breeder of trotters, mta tot the second time found guilty of fraud in

"ringing" the mare Bethel under the name of Nelly Kueebs at Berlin and Hamburg in. the spring of 1894.
