DUNBACK.

May 3.—The employees of the Dunback Canning Works issued invitations to all the residents of Dunback and surrounding districts to their annual bail in Glover's Hall, on the evening of April 23. There was a very satisfactory response, the hall being well filled, many coming long distances—from Shag Point and Palmerston. The committee in charge went to a good deal of trouble in making the necessary arrangements. The hall was very nicely decorated with flags and evergreens, and all other detaila were very complete, and reflected great credit on the committee. It was one of the most orderly and best-conducted dances held in Dunback for some time Excellent music was supplied by Messrs Applebv (piano and cornet), Diack (piccolo), and M'Oulloch (violin), and Mr D. FJyna acted as M.C. A number of 3oug3 were suug during the evening. A vote of thanks to the employees waa proposed by Mr J. Murray, and was retpouded .to by Mr Fletcher, chairman of the ball committee. School Committee.—The anuual meeting of householders of Dunback was held on Monday evening. There waß a fair attendance, and Mr D. M. Philip occupied the chair. The nominations for office were : Messrs J. Ritchie, R. Wright, J. M'Levr, D.Philip, D. Murray, W. M'Culloch, A. Garvan, J. Duncan, J. Brander, and W. Wilcock. Tho first seven wern elected. At a meeting of the new committee Mr Ritchie was elected chairman and Mr Wright clerk and treasurer, Floods Relief Fund.—A concert in aid of the sufferers by the Hawke's Bay floods is to be held in the schoolhouso ou Friday.—The Rev. MiBrown announces that a collection will be made at the evening service on May 9 for the tame purpose. t It, is to be hoped there will be a liberal lesporise, as it is a good cause. Settlement.—All the sections recently opened on tlw Makareao estate have been taken up. There was not quite so much interest taken in this last lot aa there was in the former one. Nearly all the successful applicants in the former blocks are doing good work.
