H WQHLERS, MISSIONARY AT RUAPUKE. ■ AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY (Translated from the German by John Houghton). THIS BOOK is a History of the Life and Work of the Rev. J. F. H. Wohlebs, Missionary at Ruapuke, •written by himself — the original Work having been published in Bremen in 1883. Coming to New Zealand in 1843 he established himeelf as a Missionary amongst the Maoris at Ruapuke. He converted communities, to use his own words, of loathsome savages, sunk in poverty and degradation, into communities •f prosperous, civilised human beings, receiving for many years no remuneratiou whilst ' fco doing, but providing his own food out of the soil, and teaching the Maoris to do the sameafter a civilised manner, thus saying people's souls and their bodies as well. He preserved and fully records the old Maori mythology (a sublime one), the custodians of which all died before his own demise. His Book is a valuable record of the Early History of New Zealand, and is written with great literary taste and poetic and pious feeling. Can be Oheeeed Fbom Bookselijsbs. Price, In Cloth, 3s Gdf
