OUTBREAK OF FEVER.
PRISONERS RELEASED AND THE GAOL MADE A HOSPITAL. Brisbane, April 22. D3ngue fever is raging at Normanton. Nearly the whole cf the residents are f-uftV-rixig. The warders at the gael hava succumbed, and, with the consent of the Minister for Justice, tha prisoners have been released, and tha gaol converted into a temporary hospital.
[Dengue fever is an epidemic disease, attended with high fever, cutaneo\is eruption, and sevcic pains in the head and limbs, /etembliug those of rheumatism; called aUo b'-eak^one fever. It occurs in India, Egypt, the West ludie?, &c, is of short duiatiou, and rarely fatal. The disease, when it first appeared in the British West India Islands, was caSle'l the " dandy fever," from the Ktiffnes3 and constraint which it gave to the limbs aud body. The Spaniards of tha neighbouring i?lan 4s mistook tbe term for their word "dengue," denoting prudery or stiffness; hence the term became ax, lost the n.ime of the disease.]
