No less a snni than £1615 153 Id is spent every year on milk, tha daily consumption averaging 115 gallons ; 102. /'2O eggs were eaten last year, the egg bill amounting to £426 ; for fish and ponltry £921 16s waß spent; 1200 ton 3of coal are burnt in one year in the wards alone, while the laundry consumes more than half this quantity of steam ooal. Now for some other items (made up for the year) to show what running a hospital means : Fuel and lighting, £2300 Washing, £91!) 4s 5d Bedding and linen, £800 8s lid Butter and cheese, £-103 12s 9d Bread, flour, &c, £397 16s 9d 102 tons of ice, £154. As regards the actual healing of the sick, Guy's Hospital pays in one year for drugs, chemicals, and disinfectants the gigantic sum of £1958 11s 3d. For dressings and bandageß £1685 is paid; and for instruments and appliances £673. The annual cost of nursing totals up to £4373.
