Abandoned eventually as a draw,
(a) Not so good a3 the usual p-q 4, since it enables White to establish a centre with P-Q 4 (6) 6 P-K 5 would bave driven the Xt back to Xt 1 ; the text move allows Black too much time for development. (c) Probably intending p-k b 3. he indirectly defends his knight with the queen.
(fl) If )4 P-K R 4, then b-k 2 ; 15 Q-R 5, p-k r 3, foilowed by <i-q 2, and White's queen would be in danger. (c) If Ki-Kt ?>, then b x kt ; 17 Qx B, q-k 2, etc (J) If 17 B x Xt, then p x b ; 18 Q x P, b-b 4, winning back a better pawn. (</) Forcing the exchange of queens, White has co' more prospects of continuing the attack, whilst he has also to exchange his valuable passed pawn ; the exchange of rooks is forced, and, the ending being then about equnl, a draw was agreed upon.— The Standard.
An interesting game played on February 15, in a match between the Batti Chess Club and that of the Bath Church Institute.
