STEWART ISLAND,

April 17.— The weather so far this month has been anything but settled, and the local fishing has suffered in consequence, the boats having made little or nothing. Heavy rains, with short intervals of sunshine, have fallen during the pail fortnight. It is still very wet and stormy, with little near prospect of improvement, the barometer having been very unsteady during the past few days ; and it is falling as I write. Mutton Birders. -The maoris, with a few exceptions, have all left for the mutton bird islands in various sma'l craft. They are not expected back until May 20.
