TRADE WITH WESTRALIA.

Vhe Hon. R. Rpevus is urging the Government to take action in the matter ot running a direct line ot steamers from New Zealand to Westralia. I understand this \i a question that has had the eeriom corsiderafci&a of tha management of the Union Compau* on more than one occasion, but it has so far b°eu quite impracticable, because of tho fact chat little or no back loading can be obtained. Furthermore, owing to the steamships competing between Melbourne and Westralia the through freights from New Zealand were so reasonable that i£ a lower rate were charged by a direct line the traffic could not be made to pay. Probably if the Government would undertake to subsidise a direct line for a few ye*rs it could be done.
