BUTLER'S CONFESSION. San FRA.KCISCO, April 5. The Mariposa has sailed for Sydney, via Auckland. Butler, charged with the Glenbrook murders, is on board. After confessing that he killed Preston he made j further statements to the effect that when ■ he saw what he had done he became very j frightened and concealed the body because he had no witnesses to prove that Preston was killed in self-defence. With reference to Weller, Butler s L<ate3 that he committed suicide through grief at the death of Mrs Weller. Butler wished to notify the Government of the suicide, but the other members of the prospecting party declined, fearing they might be detained as witnesses on the case. Sydney/, April 7. , The Governor has received a cable message | from the British Consul at San Francisco confirming the news of the departure of Butler by the Mariposa.
The date for receiving nominations for the Wellington Suburbs election has been fixed for the 16oh inst., and the polling takes place on the 23rd inst. Nimmo and Blair's "Standard" Seeds should be sown by every farmer and gardener who wants to make his crops a success. Once used they will always be used. DunediD. — Advfc. _
