GOLF

On Saturday afternoon the members of the St. Andrew's GM Club and the Dunedin Golf Club paid a visit to the OO l ag.> Golf dub and joined in some friendly foursome matches. There was » very strong wind blowing, but otherwije the conditions were very favourable to good golf. A large number of playei-3 from all the clubs put iv an appearance, and the links presented quite an animated appearance. Ab the conclusion of tha play the. visitors were entertained at afternoon tea in the club house. Some of the roembsrs of the Otago Ladies' Golf Club and the Otago Golf Club recently had a very pleasant combined foursome competition against Colonel Bogey. The figures assigned to the- military gentleman were very liberal, but eveu then, in a somewhat iarge field of competitors, he vanquished everybody bafc JVlisa W. Bsott aud Mr Whoeler (3 strokes), both of whom played au excellent girne and finished the round one hole up. The i*e*fc p»ic were Mrs Stilling and Dr Brown (3 strokes) who were one hol« down, and there was a tie for third place between Mrs Melland and Mr Howden (2 strokes) aud Mra and Mr J. R. Scott (8 strokes) both these pairs being two holes clown The members of tha Ladies' Club have with a few exceptions beon taking matters very easily duriug tbo summer, and if they mr au to bring the championship back to Dunedin they will require to bestir themselves » little, as the game is growing iv popularity up north, and a stroDg effort will certainly be made to keep the cup on what Otago people no doubt consider the wrong side of the Waitftki. We understand the meeting this year is to be held at Christchu r ch. As a liUlo matter of social iutercs 1 "., wo may say that the new Governor, the Earl of Ranfurly, is quite as enthusiastic a golfer as his popular predecessor, the Earl of Giasgow. From the Sketch of Jauuary 20 it appears that the record has been beaten in America. This sorb of thing is the national characteristic of America. The record consists of the longest drive by au amateur, and the gentleman who achieved thb is Mr H. It. Sweny, who accomplished the distance of 250 yards 1 foot during ,i tournament on the Watervliet Arsenal Golf Club link* at Troy, New York.
