At Auckland on the 23rd R. M. Heighton, keeper of a servants' registry office, was fined 10s and costs (£3 63) for receiving more than the proper fee. The charge should be 15s, but I tbe complainant paid £1 9a 6d. The defence I was that there were two engagements. The Matarawa bridge over the Waiohine River, near Grey town, (N.1.) was opened by the : Minister for Landi . It is 584 ft long in 11 spans. Mr M'KeDzie mentioned that the Government were spendiog £18,000 per month on public works to assist those who wished to aßaist themselves. Cotton may be distinguished from linem when one is buying handkerchiefs by moistening the I tip of tbe finger and pressing to the handkerI chief. If it wets through at once it is linen, while if any cotton enters into its manufacture it will take several seconds to wet through the threads. Also, in linen the threads are more uneven than in cotton. The Masterton Star states that a rather important disoovery was made in Masterton on Tuesday, tbe 16th. A well was being sunk on a section in Queen street, and when a depth of 6ft or 7ft was reached a deposit of black sand was encountered which, on being analysed, was found to contain gold and other minerals in fairly large quantities. An impudent robbery was committed at \ a.m. on the 23rd from a private house in Vincent street, Auckland, occupied as a bachelors' hall by G. J. Neave (of the Union Bank), J.Millis and B. Brodie (post office). C. Harris (Railway department), and J. Browning. The thief entered by the back door, and took £4.
