FRANCE AND RAIAT EA. Auckland, February 15.

News from Tahiti by the Richmond states that on January 4 the French warships Dnguay Trouin and Ti Aube landed troops at Raiatea Island, in the Society group, the natives of which have for the last eight years opposed French annexation and frequently requested English protection. The French force, consisting of 200 soldiers from New Caledonia and some. 50 native volunteers from Tahiti, marched to the native entrenchments in the centre of thf island, where 80 insurgents occupied an ambush in the tJencb. The natives, however, jUlowed tbe French to come right ud and turn the trench before they opened fire. The soldiers rushed the trench, and shot and bayoneted 17 of the natives ratally. The rest fled to the forest in the h:lle, but largo numbers after* warda surrendered. The insurgent chief, however, with a. remnant of followers, is still at liberty, and the soldiers aro searching tor him. Many prisoners have been sent to the Marquesas. It is considered that the French have now completely subdued the natives.
