HOKONUI.
I January 27.— The grass harvest may be said to ! be over. Considering the splendid season we have had for grass seed there should be some extra cood samples. The oat crop is expected to be light, although there nre a few good crops on tho high ground. The early sown turnips are looking well, but of the late sown we can't say much y=t. If we get occasional showers they should be all right. Trout Poaching.— Poaching in this part of the Makarewa is becoming more prevalent every year. Not many weeks ago there were not less than 11 men seen parading thp 6tream, and not nue of them possessed a legitimate appliance. They were warned to leave off, but nevertheless they persisted. They were also seen going borne well loaded. If such illegal taking of fish is allowed to continue the time will ultimately come when such a thing as a license will be unknown.
