POMAHAKA DOWNS.
j February I.— The week before last the currents ■ j took us down into the polar regions for a short time, and we had a touch of cold, rain, and wind, but at time of writing we are having beautiful weather. The several rain showers we have had have be.en succeeded by very warm weather, which has helped on the turnips, and in severs! places the grain is ripening I eawa patch on Mr Falkner's farm which ought to be ready to cut thiß week. > There is also a paddock of dun oate on' the Wairuna Downs estate in a very forward condition. " Things are beginning to hum on the "Pomanaka estate. Mr John Abernethy has got his house up, and his wife and family are expected h*re this week. This will always help the sohaol. Mr Clements has been carting a lot of timber up ■ to his section, and his i ew house will soon bo up. I hear that Mr Gray also intends to buiM. Mr Maxwell has two gentlemen /rom Melbourne i staying with him just now for the fhhing season. I and I hear he is expecting others. From what I can learn I understand that Mr Maxwell's genial company and liberal way of making his guests comfortable have won him many friends, and 1 shall not be surprised to tee a hoarding house up there, next year called "The Fishers' Retreat." The contract for the new road over to the punt »t the Clydevale upper station has beon let to Mr Ottaway. Mr O. Cooper has his mill at work with a little grass seed threshing, and I hope he will have everything in apple-pie order when he drives down with that traction engine of his. The School.— Miss Reid, the Pomahaka schoolmistresH, has just obtained the position of teasiier in the Afhley Dow ns School, rendered vacant by the appointment of Miss Wilkinson to the Fo>--bury school.
