January 23.— A meeting of those favourable to the erection of a creamery was held on Wednesday evening. Mr P. Haggart presided, and there was a large attendance of farmers. Mr Garden Watson, of the Dnnedin Meat and Export Company, spoke at some length upon the benefits obtainable from a creamery. In response to an invitation to those present to mark their sympathy by taking charts, the number required was fully subscribed. It was, however, decided to leave the list open to allow those absent to attach their names, after which an allotment will be made. In Camp. — The Kaitangata Rifles were in camp last week, and on Saturday before breaking up Cuptain Rutherford intimated that owing to private affairs he had decided to resign his commission at an early date. General regret was | expressed, aud with the view of getting the ! captain to reconsider the matter a requisition, | feigned by every member of the company, has been presented to that gentleman. Fears are entertained that following the captain's resignation j will come the disbandment of the company. The Castle Hill Mine.— The sudden stoppage of operations by the Castlo Hill Coal Company is j having a telling effect upon property-holders, the j number of empty house* being dailr added to. j Business people are likewise suffering through the j exodns of population. Calendar.— The well-known proprietor of the Kaitangata livery stables Rends me one of his handsome calendars, " Sir Visto." I wish him a similar meed of success to that which attended the subject of his calendar.
